1. Check the heat
TVs don't like heat. Before mounting, run the fireplace for a while and feel the wall where the TV will go. If it's too hot to keep your hand on comfortably, it's too hot for the TV. A deeper mantel or a hood deflects a lot of heat away from the wall. Gas and electric fireplaces usually put out less heat than wood-burning ones, but always check the fireplace manufacturer's clearance guidance.
2. Check the viewing height
The biggest complaint about TVs over fireplaces is neck strain. Most mantels put the bottom of the screen well above eye level. You have three options:
- Mount it as low as the mantel allows, just above it, with a tilting mount angled toward the seats.
- Use a pull-down mount like a MantelMount, which brings the screen down to eye level when you're watching. See how we installed one on a stone fireplace.
- Move the seating back. A higher TV is more comfortable from farther away.
3. Know what the fireplace is made of
- Drywall over a framed chase: mount into the studs, same as any wall.
- Brick: drill into the solid brick with a masonry bit and use sleeve or wedge anchors, never the mortar joints.
- Stacked-stone veneer: it looks solid but isn't structural. Anchor through it into the framing behind.
- Solid stone: needs a hammer drill, the right anchors and a careful hand so the stone doesn't crack.
- Marble or tile surrounds: there's no room for error. A wrong hole can't be hidden.
4. Plan the wires before the TV goes up
Nothing ruins a fireplace TV like cables hanging down the stone. Options include:
- In-wall power kit and HDMI behind drywall, using a code-rated power kit (a regular TV power cord shouldn't run inside a wall).
- Routing around the chimney through the side of the chase when the masonry blocks a straight drop.
- Moving the equipment to a cabinet beside the fireplace and running one cable up.
- A slim, paintable channel when the wall can't be fished.
5. Think about sound
A soundbar can mount directly under the TV, or on the mantel if the TV sits above it. With a pull-down mount, a TV-attached soundbar moves with the screen. In-wall or in-ceiling speakers keep the fireplace wall clean.
6. Consider a Frame TV
A Samsung Frame TV in art mode looks like a painting over the mantel when it's off, which makes the high placement feel intentional. See our Frame TV installation service.
