Soundbar vs. surround sound: which is right for your room?

A soundbar is simple and clean. A surround system sounds bigger and lasts longer. Here's how to decide.

The case for a soundbar

A soundbar puts several speakers in one slim box under the TV. It connects with a single HDMI cable (eARC), the TV remote controls the volume, and setup takes minutes. Many soundbars can add a wireless subwoofer and rear speakers later, and some support Dolby Atmos with upfiring drivers.

The case for a full surround system

A surround system uses an AV receiver and separate speakers placed around the room. Because sound really comes from beside and behind you, the effect is far more convincing. Each piece can also be upgraded on its own, so the system grows with you.

A middle ground

A soundbar with a wireless sub and wireless rear speakers gets you much of the way there with less wiring, though the rear speakers still need power outlets. Another option is a 3.1 or 5.1 system with in-ceiling surrounds, which gives you real separation with nothing on the floor.

Our take

For a bedroom or a smaller living room, a good soundbar mounted cleanly under the TV is hard to beat. For a basement or media room where movie night matters, go with a surround system. You'll notice the difference the first night. Read our 2.1 vs. 5.1 vs. 7.1 guide for help choosing a layout, or see our TV and soundbar mounting service.

Common questions

Can you mount a soundbar under a wall-mounted TV?

Yes. We mount soundbars on a bracket directly under the TV or attached to the TV mount, and hide the HDMI and power cables in the wall with the TV wiring.

Is a soundbar with wireless rear speakers real surround sound?

It's closer than a soundbar alone, because the rear speakers place sound behind you. A full receiver-based system still gives better separation, bass and upgrade options.

Which is better for a basement theater?

A full surround system. Basements usually have room for proper speaker placement and the wiring can be hidden in the ceiling, which gives a much more immersive result than a soundbar.
